The Most Effective Ingredients for Treating 7 Common Skin Problems
SadaNews - A new American study investigated the most effective ingredients for treating 7 common skin problems, which include: wrinkles, acne, redness, dark spots, enlarged pores, dry skin, and oily skin.
Researchers at Northwestern University conducted the study, the results of which were published in the April issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. This study was based on a process called "Delphi Consensus" aimed at highlighting convergence of opinions through a survey where participants learn about others' opinions and review their arguments and responses. Each opinion remains anonymous and experts do not interact with the responses.
This process is repeated several times as necessary until a consensus is reached or differences in opinion are highlighted.
In this study, 62 dermatology specialists evaluated 318 ingredients from skincare products, then ranked them on a scale from 1 to 9. After two rounds of testing conducted by the study organizers, the research was able to identify the ingredients that received broad consensus, with 23 of them being recommended.
Among the most effective skincare products, experts mention mineral sunscreen as it provides protection against premature wrinkles, redness, and dry skin. This list also includes:
• Retinoids derived from vitamin A as they improve the appearance of wrinkles, acne, dark spots, enlarged pores, and oily skin, in addition to enhancing collagen production.
• Azelaic acid that treats acne and dark spots.
• Benzoyl peroxide that treats acne and oily skin.
• Glycolic acid that provides solutions for acne and dark spots.
• Niacinamide that treats redness and dark spots, improves skin texture, and reduces enlarged pores.
• Vitamin C that treats fine lines and wrinkles in addition to dark spots. It is a powerful antioxidant that brightens skin and protects it from free radical damage while stimulating collagen production.
• Salicylic acid that treats acne and oily skin.
Experts also highlight the importance of hyaluronic acid for its strong moisturizing effect, maintaining moisture within the skin while enhancing its elasticity, while ceramides strengthen the skin's protective barrier and maintain moisture, protecting against dryness.
Peptides work to improve skin elasticity, stimulate collagen production, and prevent wrinkles. It is worth mentioning that the efficacy of these ingredients may vary from case to case, thus it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for personalized recommendations regarding skin type and suitable solutions for its issues.
