President Abbas Issues Decision Regarding Holding Elections for the Palestinian National Council
SadaNews - President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decision on Saturday regarding the holding of elections for a new National Council before the end of this year.
The text of the decision states that after reviewing the basic law of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the electoral system of the Palestinian National Council and in order to achieve the public interest, the Executive Committee of the PLO decided in its meeting held in Ramallah on 17-7-2025:
First: To hold elections for a new National Council before the end of the year 2025, according to the electoral system of the Palestinian National Council, with the date to be determined by a decision from the Chairman of the Executive Committee.
Second: The Palestinian National Council shall consist of (350 members), with two-thirds of its members representing the homeland, and the other third representing overseas and the diaspora.
Third: Among the conditions for membership is the member's commitment to the program of the Palestine Liberation Organization and its international obligations and the resolutions of international legitimacy.
Fourth: The Executive Committee shall issue a decision to form a preparatory committee responsible for making the necessary arrangements for conducting the elections, chaired by the President of the Palestinian National Council, with participation from the Office of the Council's Presidency and members of the Executive Committee, representatives from Palestinian national factions, a number of popular organizations, civil society, and Palestinian communities abroad, with its tasks defined in its formation decision, to be presented to the Chairman of the Executive Committee within a maximum of two weeks from the date of issuance of this decision for approval.
