Gideon Levy Reveals the Dark Side of the 'Human City' Project in Gaza
SadaNews - Israeli journalist Gideon Levy wrote that Mordechai Anielewicz (the leader of the Jewish Fighting Organization during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising) would feel shame and embarrassment to death again if he were alive today upon hearing about the project proposed by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, fully supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to build what is called a "Human City" in southern Gaza Strip.
In his article in "Haaretz," Levy considered that Anielewicz would not imagine that anyone would dare to propose such a plan, which he described as "diabolical", especially since its proponent is Israel Katz, son of Maier and Malka (Nira) Katz, Holocaust survivors who lost most of their family members in Nazi extermination camps. What would they say to him now?
Levy pointed out that if Anielewicz could comprehend the complacency and neglect within Israeli society regarding this plan, as well as the relative global silence, including from Europe and Germany, he would die this time from deep sorrow.
The writer sharply criticized the idea of creating a "ghetto" by Israel, wondering incredulously how the plan could be presented as legitimate. He imagined a more horrific scenario where the suggestion would be made to establish an extermination camp for those who do not pass the security check at the ghetto's entrance.
Levy added that Israel is collectively killing the inhabitants of Gaza anyway, sarcastically asking: Why not simplify the process to preserve soldiers' lives? Perhaps someone would suggest establishing a mini holocaust in Khan Younis, with entry being "optional" like in the Rafah ghetto and the "Human City," while exiting would be mandatory as proposed by the minister.
He emphasized that genocide does not happen suddenly, but goes through successive stages that begin with dehumanization, as happened to the Jews in Germany and to the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, followed by demonization, fear promotion, and the idea that "no one is innocent in Gaza" and that "the events of October 7 represent an existential threat that may recur," leading to displacement and calls for mass killings.
Levy clarified that he has avoided making comparisons between Israel and Nazism for years, considering Israel to be a moral state and not Nazi, but he now sees what is happening in Gaza as extremely shocking. He added: If the plan is not a prelude to genocide, it is a warning bell that must be sounded immediately.
In conclusion, he pointed out that Israel has lost the moral right to use the term "humanity," as it has turned Gaza into a mass grave and a land of ruin. Those who see only the suffering of Israeli hostages and overlook the Israeli army's killing of Palestinians every few hours, equivalent to the number of hostages, have lost their connection to humanity.
