Moroccan YouTuber Sparks Controversy After Claiming to Discover Treasure
SadaNews - Moroccan YouTuber, known as "Bensnass", has sparked widespread controversy on social media after posting a video in which he claims to have found an archaeological treasure inside an abandoned palace near Beni Mellal.
In the video, Bensnass showcased gold pieces and jewelry that he claimed to have discovered inside the abandoned palace, pointing out that it was previously owned by a notable figure of authority, but he provided no evidence.
Opinions were divided between those who considered it an exciting archaeological discovery and those who viewed it as an attempt to mislead and attract viewers.
One commentator wrote: "If this treasure is real, the authorities should intervene to protect it." Meanwhile, another mocked: "A new treasure every week; it seems that all of Morocco is buried in gold."
The family of the property owner has filed an official complaint against the YouTuber, accusing him of trespassing on private property and filming and publishing misleading content that infringes on their privacy.
What does Moroccan law say?
Article 528 of the Moroccan Penal Code stipulates legal regulations concerning the discovery of treasures, deeming the failure to report such findings a violation subject to punishment.
The law requires anyone who discovers a treasure, even within their own property, to notify the authorities within 15 days of the date of discovery. In case of violation, the offender faces a fine ranging between 20 and 25 dollars.
The penalty intensifies if the person fully or partially retains the treasure without official permission, even if they notify the authorities. In this case, the law prescribes imprisonment from one month to six months, along with a financial fine ranging between 20 and 25 dollars.
