Trump: The Iranian Nuclear Program May Resume from a Different Location
SadaNews - Last night, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran has not agreed to permit inspections of its nuclear sites or to abandon uranium enrichment.
He clarified to reporters aboard Air Force One that he believes Iran’s nuclear program has suffered a permanent setback, although Tehran may resume it from a different location.
Trump mentioned that he would discuss the Iranian issue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visits the White House next Monday.
The U.S. president noted on Thursday that Iran wants to talk to the United States, and he is ready to meet with its representatives "if necessary".
Trump told reporters at Andrews Air Force Base while heading to a campaign rally in Iowa: "Iran wants to talk, and I think they want to talk to me, and it's time for that."
He continued: "We are not seeking to harm them; we just want to give them the opportunity to be a country again."
Two sources familiar with the talks between Tehran and Washington stated that U.S. envoy to the White House, Steve Wietkoff, plans to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in Oslo next week to reinvigorate the nuclear talks, according to the American Axios website.
The sources indicated that the timing of the meeting has not yet been finalized, and neither Tehran nor Washington has officially announced the meeting.
According to Axios, the two sources confirmed that Wietkoff and Araqchi have been in direct contact since the end of the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, after the United States mediated a ceasefire between the two sides, noting that officials from Oman and Qatar continue to mediate between Iran and the United States.
It is noteworthy that the United States and Iran have held five rounds of indirect talks mediated by Oman since April, hosted in Muscat and Rome, aimed at finding a new diplomatic solution regarding Iran's nuclear program before Israel launched its strikes on June 22, targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites, assassinating several military leaders and nuclear scientists, after which Iran responded with extensive missile attacks in a war that lasted 12 days, leading the U.S. president to suddenly announce a ceasefire between the two countries.
