Recovery of Sector Markets and Warnings of Rising Vegetable Prices

SadaNews Economy - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) warned today, Friday, of a rise in food prices in the Gaza Strip to unprecedented levels due to Israel's destruction of agricultural land and its control over it.

UNRWA stated in a post on the "X" platform that all agricultural lands in the Gaza Strip have become "destroyed or inaccessible," leaving families without income and driving food prices to unprecedented levels after two years of the Israeli genocide war.

It added that "Palestinian families that used to live off their land in the Gaza Strip no longer have any source of income and therefore cannot afford the cost of food even after returning to the markets."

The agency warned of rising food prices in Gaza, stating that "a kilogram of tomatoes that previously cost 60 cents is now 15 dollars if available at all."

It stressed the "urgent need for unrestricted humanitarian aid flow to Gaza until the agricultural sector is rebuilt."

For his part, a reporter from "SadaNews Economy" mentioned that frozen meats and poultry entered the Gaza Strip on Thursday and Friday, with the price of a kilogram of meat reaching 170 shekels, while the price of a kilogram of chicken is 130 shekels.

He pointed out the drop in basic commodity prices, where the price of a bag of flour (25 kg) fell from 600 shekels to 30 shekels, the price of a kilogram of sugar from 400 shekels to 2 shekels, and rice from 100 to 13 shekels.

The sector's markets are witnessing a good recovery with the availability of goods, but they are considered expensive compared to what they were before the war.
