The Palestinian Health Sector Between Current Challenges and the Necessity for National Partnership

The crisis of the health sector in Palestine is one of the most serious challenges facing the Palestinian government at this stage, due to the intertwining of several complex political, economic, financial, and humanitarian factors.

The Palestinian health system faces a compounded and complex crisis as a result of the political, economic, and financial conditions in Palestine, in addition to the increasing health needs of citizens under the current extraordinary circumstances.

Amid these challenges, overcoming the crisis requires collective effort and shared national responsibility. The government, official institutions, unions, the private sector, civil society organizations, and international partners are all called upon to work in a spirit of partnership and integration to protect the citizen's right to treatment and health care.

The national interest necessitates prioritizing dialogue and cooperation over disputes, unifying efforts and energies to ensure the continuity of health services for citizens and support the medical staff who carry out their mission under difficult and exceptional conditions.

Major crises are not resolved by blaming others, but by everyone taking on their national and moral responsibilities, working together to find realistic solutions that preserve the dignity of the patient, safeguard the stability of health institutions, and enhance the steadfastness of our Palestinian people in facing challenges.

The Palestinian patient must remain a priority for all, and protecting the health sector is a national responsibility that cannot be delayed or evaded.

Everyone is fully aware that the cause of the health crisis and all the crises we are experiencing stems from the Israeli occupation, due to the cuts and withholding of clearance funds, which has affected the government's ability to finance basic services across all sectors, as well as the pressures resulting from the war on Gaza and the destruction of vast parts of the health infrastructure, leading to the accumulation of debts owed by the health sector and medical service providers, and the impact on health workers amid the ongoing financial crisis.

Despite limited resources, the Palestinian government is trying to maintain the continuity of essential health services, secure life-saving medications and treatments, and is continuously seeking international and Arab support for the health sector, despite the scale of the challenges exceeding the available capabilities at present.

Protecting the Palestinian health sector is not solely the responsibility of the government, but is a collective national responsibility. The doctor, nurse, patient, and both formal and informal institutions are all partners in defending the Palestinian citizen's right to treatment and dignified health care, especially under the exceptional conditions that Palestine is going through.

Therefore, urgent requirements must be addressed to confront the crisis, including providing immediate and sustainable financial support for the health sector, enhancing the strategic stockpile of medications and medical supplies, supporting health workers and enabling them to continue their mission, expanding cooperation with international institutions and donors, and developing health infrastructure while promoting reliance on modern health technology.

A Final Word

The Palestinian health sector constitutes the first line of defense for the life and dignity of citizens. Amid current challenges, supporting hospitals, medical teams, and protecting citizens' right to treatment is a national and humanitarian responsibility that requires the combined efforts of the government, civil institutions, unions, the private sector, and the international community to ensure the continuity of health services and not leave the Palestinian patient alone in the face of illness and crises.
