US Supreme Court Rejects Trump's Request to Limit Birthright Citizenship

SadaNews - The US Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Donald Trump's effort to limit the right to citizenship acquired by birth in the United States, while the President called on Congress to take action against the court's ruling.

In a long-awaited decision issued on the last day of the judicial term, the court ruled by a majority of six votes to three to uphold the right to American citizenship for those born on US soil.

In response, the American president urged Congress, which is controlled by the Republicans, to take action against the Supreme Court's decision.

Trump wrote on his platform "Truth Social": "The Supreme Court upheld the right to birthright citizenship, which is unfortunate for our country, but we can easily compensate for that in Congress through legislation".

On the first day of his second term, Trump had signed an executive order barring children born to parents residing in the United States illegally or holding temporary visas from automatically obtaining American citizenship.

However, lower courts halted the implementation of this order, arguing it was unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court supported this view. Its Chief Justice, John Roberts, wrote: "Children born in the United States to parents who are here illegally or temporarily (...) are citizens at birth".
