Report: America Consults on Expanding Deployment of Its Nuclear Weapons in Europe
SadaNews - The United States is conducting consultations regarding the potential deployment of nuclear weapons in other European nations that are members of NATO.
The "Financial Times" reported today, Tuesday, that U.S. officials have expressed their openness to the idea of additional deployments beyond the six current countries hosting nuclear-capable bombers.
The newspaper added that this step would include more countries hosting what are called American dual-capable aircraft capable of launching nuclear strikes.
At the same time, it confirmed that reaching an agreement to expand the hosting of U.S. nuclear weapons is not imminent.
The report mentioned that countries in the eastern flank of NATO, including Poland and some Baltic states, have shown interest in hosting potential bases for these aircraft, indicating that discussions are taking place through NATO channels.
U.S. President Donald Trump and many of his aides criticize European allies for not spending enough on their militaries and relying on the United States for conventional defense.
Last month, European members of NATO called on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to clarify Washington's "confusing" decisions regarding its troop presence on the continent while they sought to calm President Trump's anger over their stance on the war with Iran, ahead of an anticipated summit in July.
At that time, Trump confused NATO Foreign Ministers, who gathered in Helsingborg, Sweden, when he announced he would send 5,000 troops to Poland, marking a clear reversal of Washington's earlier decision to cancel the planned deployment.
The NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, and the Polish Foreign Minister welcomed this announcement, but it raised concerns about a lack of coordination between the United States and its allies.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated, "It is indeed confusing, and it's not always easy to deal with it."
Trump's retreat came after Washington suddenly announced earlier this month that it would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany amid a dispute between the American president and Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
