Report: Trump Loses Patience with Tehran After Response to His Proposal
SadaNews - After a meeting with the National Security Council following the receipt of the Iranian response to the U.S. proposal to end the war, the patience of U.S. President Donald Trump is running thin, according to some of his aides.
They indicated that Trump is seriously considering resuming military operations, as reported by CNN on Tuesday.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the U.S. president has become less patient regarding the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as what he perceives as divisions within the Iranian leadership that hinder its ability to make substantive concessions in the nuclear talks.
The sources added that the recent Iranian response, which Trump described as "completely unacceptable" and "stupid," has led several officials to question whether Tehran is willing to take a serious negotiating stance.
Additionally, the sources pointed to the existence of different factions within the U.S. administration that have put forward varying approaches on how to move forward. Some, including officials at the Pentagon, have called for a more hardline approach to pressure Iran to come to the negotiating table, including launching targeted strikes that further weaken its position.
Conversely, others continue to push for giving the diplomatic track a genuine chance.
Moreover, many around Trump have expressed a desire for Pakistani mediators to be more frank and direct in their communications with the Iranians. Some of the U.S. president's officials have long questioned whether the Pakistanis are firmly conveying his displeasure with the course of the talks, as he has publicly expressed.
Two sources also said that some officials in the administration believe that Pakistan is presenting a more positive picture of the Iranian stance to the United States than reality reflects. A regional official said on Monday that there is intensive movement from regional countries and from Pakistan to convey a message to the Iranians that Trump feels frustrated and that this is their last opportunity to engage seriously in diplomacy.
The official added that the United States and Iran are operating with different levels of tolerance and varying timelines in their approaches to negotiations, noting that Tehran has withstood economic pressures for decades.
Trump met again with his national security team at the White House on Monday to discuss future options.
Informed sources regarding the talks believe that a significant decision regarding the next course is unlikely to be made before the president's departure to China, scheduled for later Tuesday afternoon.
