Britain Announces Deployment of Destroyer to the Middle East on Mission in the Strait of Hormuz
SadaNews - The United Kingdom announced on Saturday that it will deploy the HMS Dragon destroyer, currently in the Mediterranean Sea, to the Middle East in preparation for a mission in the Strait of Hormuz "when conditions permit".
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense told AFP that "this pre-deployment of HMS Dragon is part of a careful plan aimed at ensuring that the United Kingdom is ready, within a multinational coalition co-led by the UK and France, to secure the strait when conditions allow it".
The destroyer "HMS Dragon" had sailed on Tuesday from a port in southern England heading to the Eastern Mediterranean to "enhance British defenses in the region", amidst the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran, according to the Royal Navy.
The sailing of the destroyer from its base in Portsmouth follows criticisms from the opposition in Britain, as well as the Cypriot government, over what was seen as a delay in responding to an attack on the British Akrotiri base in southern Cyprus on March 1.
A drone of Iranian origin had struck the runway of the Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri.
The destroyer is capable of shooting down drones and ballistic missiles, whether launched by Iran or its proxies.
In a statement, the British Ministry of Defense said that the destroyer "is one of the most capable air defense warships in the world and will enhance our defensive capabilities in the region by strengthening our ability to detect, track, and destroy aerial threats, including drones".
The ministry stated that the Royal Navy crews worked diligently to prepare the destroyer, completing in six days what typically requires six weeks of work.
The British Ministry of Defense had previously said that another British ship is being prepared and may be deployed in the region.
It added: "We have decided to raise the readiness of the RFA Lyme Bay, a ship equipped with a helicopter landing pad and humanitarian and medical capabilities, as a precautionary measure in case it is needed for maritime missions in the eastern Mediterranean".
Recently, the UK has deployed additional drone countermeasure experts and two additional "Wildcat" and "Merlin" helicopters in Cyprus, along with Typhoon fighters in Qatar.
The British Ministry of Defense announced that a ground unit shot down a drone in Iraqi airspace at night that was heading towards coalition forces.
In a related context, a spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed on Tuesday that Britain is working with allies on a range of options to support commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in the face of Iranian threats.
After talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni late Monday evening, the British government clarified in a statement that the three countries agreed on "the vital importance of freedom of navigation" through the strait, and "to work closely together in the coming days to address Iranian threats".
