Limited US-Iranian Naval Clash in the Strait of Hormuz
SadaNews - The US military stated that it launched retaliatory strikes against Iran late Thursday, targeting sites it claimed were responsible for attacking American forces, describing these actions as 'unjustified hostilities' from Tehran.
The military said in a statement, "US Central Command eliminated the incoming threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking US forces, including rocket and drone launch sites, command and control centers, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance facilities." The statement added that Iran launched several missiles, drones, and small boats while three US Navy destroyers were transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Later, President Donald Trump stated that three Navy destroyers crossed the Strait of Hormuz under fire, adding that no damage was inflicted on the destroyers while "significant damage was inflicted on the Iranian attackers."
Trump wrote on Truth Social, "Three world-class American destroyers successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz under fire. No damage was done to the three destroyers, but serious damage was inflicted on the Iranian attackers."
For its part, Iranian state media reported that an unnamed military official claimed that US naval units operating in the Strait of Hormuz were targeted by Iranian missile fire, following a US attack on an Iranian oil tanker. It added that US warships were forced to retreat after sustaining damage from the Iranian missile attacks.
The timing of the incident remains unclear.
The US Department of Defense has not yet responded to a request for comment.
The strikes come at a time when the United States is awaiting Iran's response to a US proposal aimed at halting the fighting between the two countries while leaving unresolved more contentious issues such as the Iranian nuclear program at this time.
