Washington to Send 10,000 Additional Troops to the Region in the Coming Days
SadaNews - The United States will send about 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East in the coming days, aiming to "pressure Iran into reaching an agreement," according to American officials who stated that "the forces include about 6,000 troops aboard an aircraft carrier and accompanying ships, with approximately 4,200 troops from the Boxer Amphibious Group and Marines expected to arrive by the end of the month"; as reported today by the "Washington Post" on Wednesday.
The U.S. military announced, as the blockade imposed on Iran entered its second day, a complete halt to maritime trade to and from Iran, a move that reflects a new escalation in tensions between the two sides, coinciding with ongoing uncertainty over the future of the fragile truce between Washington and Tehran.
In the political context, the White House has not ruled out the possibility of returning to a second round of negotiations, despite the stalled first round that took place in Islamabad, amid talks of efforts to keep communication channels open.
For his part, U.S. President Donald Trump stated in an interview with "Fox News" that the war with Iran is nearing its end, affirming that U.S. intervention has prevented Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons at this time.
U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance also indicated that the U.S. administration is not seeking a limited agreement, but a "major deal" that fully ends the conflict, noting that there has been progress in negotiations with Pakistan, despite the ongoing lack of trust between the two sides.
At the same time, European countries are intensifying their efforts to enhance navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz, where reports indicate that European ships will participate in maritime corridor protection missions without direct U.S. leadership.
International sources have also reported that France and Britain are working on a plan to form an international coalition to ensure freedom of navigation after the war, including the deployment of military vessels and mine-clearing operations, in a move that may occur without U.S. participation.
