Taiwan Detects Chinese Warplanes Amid Meeting Between Xi and Opposition Leader
SadaNews - The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense announced today (Saturday) that it detected 16 Chinese warplanes flying near the island yesterday (Friday), coinciding with a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Taiwanese opposition leader.
Xi met the leader of the largest opposition party in Taiwan, Cheng Li-wen, early yesterday morning in Beijing, stating that China "will never slacken" in its efforts to reclaim the island, which Beijing considers part of its territory.
Cheng described her visit as a peace mission aimed at reducing tensions, informing Xi that she looks forward to both her party, the Kuomintang, and the Communist Party of China, enhancing the "institutionalization" of peace between China and Taiwan.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense reported in its daily report on Chinese military activity over the past 24 hours that 16 Chinese warplanes flew near the island from mid-morning to noon yesterday (Friday).
