Trump Requests Funding to Reopen Notorious Alcatraz Prison
SadaNews - Donald Trump, the U.S. President, requested $152 million from Congress in his new budget proposal to reopen the notorious Alcatraz prison.
The budget proposal for the fiscal year 2027, released by the White House on Friday evening, seeks funding to rebuild Alcatraz as a "state-of-the-art secure prison facility."
The funding covers the first year of project costs and is part of a larger request amounting to $1.7 billion to finance "dilapidated detention facilities" across the United States.
In May, Trump stated that he had instructed the relevant authorities to rebuild and reopen the prison.
Alcatraz, known as "The Rock," was a maximum-security prison located on a windswept island in San Francisco Bay.
For 29 years, the island served as a place of exile for the "worst of the worst" among troublemakers and escape artists. The last prisoners held there were released in 1963.
