Consisting of 2200 Soldiers.. Pentagon Sends Amphibious Unit to the Middle East
SadaNews - The U.S. Department of Defense has begun to bolster its military presence in the Middle East by sending additional troops from the Marine Corps and warships, amid escalating Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
Three U.S. officials reported today, Friday, that U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, approved a request made by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to deploy part of an amphibious readiness group alongside a unit from the Marine Expeditionary Force.
This force typically consists of several warships and about 5,000 Marines.
Two officials clarified that the amphibious ship USS Tripoli, stationed in Japan and accompanied by Marine forces, is currently en route to the Middle East.
They noted that Marine forces are already present in the region to participate in operations related to the escalation with Iran.
This military reinforcement comes at a time when Iranian attacks on the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted navigation in this strategic maritime corridor, causing disturbances to the global economy and rising fuel prices, in addition to military and political challenges for U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In the same context, two U.S. officials stated that the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU), which consists of about 2,200 personnel aboard 3 amphibious ships from the U.S. Navy, has been ordered to head to the Middle East.
They added that this unit is permanently stationed in Japan and usually operates within the Indo-Pacific Command's area of responsibility.
The officials also clarified that the deployment of this force does not necessarily mean its use as ground troops inside Iran, but it provides multiple capabilities for military leaders, including ground and amphibious operations, as well as air capabilities that can be utilized when necessary, according to ABC News.
They pointed out that this unit also includes a squadron of F-35 fighters and a squadron of MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.
Targeting Iranian Military Sites
These developments come amid escalating military confrontation in the Middle East, where leaders from Iran, Israel, and the United States have shown increased defiance and vowed in their latest statements to continue fighting as the war in the Middle East continues, causing disruptions to the lives of millions and shaking financial markets.
As the war entered its third week, the United States and its allies conducted strikes targeting Iranian military sites, including missile facilities and military bases, as part of ongoing operations to weaken Tehran's military capabilities, while the latter responded by launching missiles.
