Romania Faces Alliance Test.. Washington Requests Military Reinforcements to Address Rising Tensions in the Middle East
SadaNews - The United States has asked the Romanian government to allow the deployment of additional forces at Mihai Kogalniceanu Air Base in the east of the country, in order to later participate in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Romanian news channel Digi24 reported, citing informed sources, that the American request includes the deployment of additional fighter jets along with military personnel, although the sources did not disclose their numbers or details regarding the expected reinforcements.
According to the site, the air base is considered a key strategic asset, which could provide the United States with an advantage in military operations, and its relative proximity to the Middle East makes it a potential logistical hub.
It is noteworthy that the base has previously been used in the context of the escalation between Israel and Iran, as British aircraft stationed at Mihai Kogalniceanu Air Base launched strikes on targets in Iran.
Currently, over a thousand American soldiers are stationed at Kogalniceanu Air Base.
Immediately, Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă moved to address this issue by calling for an emergency meeting of the Romanian Supreme Defense Council on the morning of March 11, dedicated to reviewing the American request and assessing its implications, within what the council described as "an analysis of the temporary deployment of American forces" on Romanian territory.
This step falls within Washington's ongoing efforts to bolster its military presence in the bases of allied countries within NATO, amid a noticeable increase in tensions in the Middle East region.
