European Document: The EU is Considering Supporting the Gaza Management Committee
SadaNews - A document from the European External Action Service has revealed that the European Union is exploring the possibility of providing support to the National Committee for Gaza Management.
The document, which was distributed to member states on Tuesday, stated that "the EU is in communication with the newly established transitional governing structures for Gaza."
It also added that the bloc "is also considering the possibility of providing support to the National Committee for Gaza Management," according to Reuters.
This comes as European foreign ministers will discuss the situation in Gaza during a meeting in Brussels on February 23.
No Official Membership
Brussels announced on Monday that a European Commissioner will participate in the first meeting this week of the "Peace Council," formed by U.S. President Donald Trump, without the EU officially joining the body.
The Commissioner for Mediterranean Affairs, Dubravka Suica, is scheduled to travel to Washington to attend the meeting set for Thursday, in order to highlight the European position on the situation in Gaza.
European Union spokesman Guillaume Mercier stated that Suica "will participate in the Peace Council meeting as part of the segment dedicated to Gaza," stressing that the European Commission is not a member of the council.
For its part, the European Commission stated during a press briefing that it still has "a number of questions" regarding the council, particularly concerning "scope of application," "governance," and "alignment with the United Nations Charter."
"Peace Council"
It is worth mentioning that the "Peace Council" was initially established to end the war in Gaza, but its charter assigns it a much broader mandate to settle armed conflicts around the world.
Additionally, the permanent members of the "Peace Council" are required to pay one billion dollars to become members, raising concerns that the body could turn into a "fee-based" version of the United Nations Security Council.
As for the National Committee for Gaza Management, formed last January as part of Trump's plan, it consists of 15 moderate Palestinian professionals with expertise in development, relief, and humanitarian work within the Gaza Strip, away from political polarizations.
Its responsibilities include managing the daily affairs of the sector under the supervision of the Gaza Council and rebuilding it, with a budget allocated for two years.
