Acting Venezuelan President Promises Free Elections
SadaNews - Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez pledged to organize free elections in the country, stating that this means "a free state governed by justice."
In an interview with the American network "NBC", Rodriguez, who took power following Nicolás Maduro—who was arrested by the United States in early January (January) during a military operation in Caracas—responded to a question about whether she would commit to holding "free and fair" elections by saying, "Yes, absolutely."
She added through a translator that "organizing free and fair elections in Venezuela means a free state ruled by justice," but also "without sanctions, a state not subject to international intimidation or harassment from the foreign press."
The opposition boycotted the parliamentary elections of 2025.
A year ago, about 2,400 people were arrested, and 28 killed during the crackdown that followed the disputed presidential elections in which Nicolás Maduro announced his victory. The opposition, which still claims it won those elections, accused the government of fraud and released figures from polling stations showing its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the winner.
The National Electoral Council, accused of being under government control, did not publish detailed results, justifying this by claiming it was the victim of a cyber attack.
