Lapid: No to a Bad Deal with Iran.. We Will Destroy Its Infrastructure If It Attacks
Translation by SadaNews - Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid warned against the dangers of reaching a weak agreement between the United States and Iran, emphasizing that the issue of ballistic missiles must be at the core of any understandings, as reported by the Hebrew channel Reshet Kan and translated by SadaNews.
Lapid stated: "We must push the issue of ballistic missiles; it is crucial for security. We must do our utmost to avoid a bad deal. If they attack, we must completely destroy their infrastructure. We must dismantle their economy from within. I am very hardline on this issue."
Lapid's statements come at a time when Washington is engaged in talks with Tehran regarding the future of the nuclear deal, amid disagreements over the restrictions on Iran's missile program and its regional role. The negotiations led by the U.S. administration aim to revive the nuclear agreement reached in 2015, but disputes over the extent of monitoring and restrictions on Iran continue to impede reaching a final formula.
Israeli officials fear that any agreement that does not include strict limitations on Iran's ballistic missile program could threaten the security of the region, while Tehran asserts that its defensive program is non-negotiable.
As a second round of Iranian-American nuclear talks is expected to be scheduled soon, following the first round held in Muscat two days ago, Israeli sources revealed the demands of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
They indicated that there are six demands that Netanyahu insists on in those negotiations, which he communicated to the U.S. side, namely: the complete cancellation of the nuclear program, zero enrichment capability, removal of all enriched uranium within Iran, limiting the range of ballistic missiles to 300 kilometers, complete dismantling of Tehran's network of proxies in the region, and comprehensive and long-term oversight of any future agreement, according to Channel 14 in Israel.
