EU Representative Visits Silwan Amid Surge in Forced Evictions and Home Demolitions
SadaNews - The representative of the European Union, along with member states and like-minded countries, visited the Batn al-Hawa and al-Bustan areas in the town of Silwan in East Jerusalem, amid an unprecedented surge in forced evictions, home demolitions, and settlers' seizure of Palestinian homes.
Data indicates that Israeli authorities recently carried out the eviction of 14 Palestinian families from their homes, while approximately 30 more families, comprising about 175 individuals, face imminent eviction threats. Moreover, the risk of forced displacement threatens over 2,000 Palestinians in Silwan, in actions deemed illegal under international law.
These developments occur against the backdrop of a broader escalation of settler attacks, land confiscation, and the displacement of Palestinian residents throughout the West Bank, alongside intensified efforts to alter the historical, religious, and cultural character of the city of Jerusalem.
The EU representative affirmed that the use of discriminatory laws to carry out these actions does not exempt Israel from its legal obligations as an occupying power, calling on Israeli authorities to immediately cease these practices and work towards a sustainable solution that protects the rights of Palestinians to remain in their homes.
