Gideon Levy: Israel Wants Another War

SadaNews - In a bitter article, Israeli writer Gideon Levy paints a grim picture of the reality in the Gaza Strip, asserting that the recent military escalation in the Muwasi area in Khan Younis is not merely a "reaction" but a systematic policy to kill any chance of calm.

Levy sees in his article in Haaretz that Israel, which has not stopped killing since the ceasefire agreement began last October, is now striving to thwart the "Trump Plan," referring to U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan, and to return to a state of full-scale war.

The Death Trap in the "Safe Areas"

Levy describes the scenes coming from the southern Gaza Strip as "horrific as usual"; scattered bodies, disfigured children, and even animals have not been spared from the brutality. He expresses his disgust at seeing a horse killed as a result of these bombings, stating, "The sight was devastating, as the body of the brown horse was thin, and the bombardment certainly put an end to its suffering, suffering of a hungry horse forced to work hard in the areas of the Strip."

The writer points out that the bombardment that targeted the tents of the displaced in Muwasi – which the occupation claimed were safe – proves the "complex Israeli deception," as while Hamas fulfilled its commitments to release detainees, the Israeli military machine continued to reap lives, killing more than 500 Palestinians during the so-called "truce."

Levy asserts that Saturday’s strikes were neither accidental nor opportunistic, noting that Israel claimed it launched them in response to Hamas's violation of the ceasefire agreement, a claim Levy doubts, emphasizing that it is impossible to ignore the temporal proximity between the killings that occurred on Saturday and the reopening of the Rafah crossing scheduled for today, Sunday.

Destructive Agenda:

Levy shifts to political analysis, stating that the timing of the massacres is directly aimed at:

First, sabotaging the political process: obstructing the reopening of the Rafah crossing and beginning the second phase of the American plan.

Second, betting on failure: the Israeli government adopts a policy based on the hope that the Trump Plan fails, to obtain a "new green light" to completely reoccupy the Strip, something Levy relays from writer Amos Harel in an article for Haaretz last Friday, where he states that the Israeli government's policy "is based on its hope for the failure of the Trump Plan, and that U.S. President will give Israel the green light to reclaim Gaza."

The Gambler's Escape: Levy compares the Israeli government to a "gamblier" who lost his fortune and insists on another round, even though the country in 2026 has become worse (internally and internationally) than it was in 2023, according to Levy.

The writer concludes with a biting note about Israeli "indifference"; while Gaza floods with blood, the streets of Israel are busy with advertisements for luxury (jacuzzi tubs and sporting equipment), in a paradox that reflects the depth of moral decline and escape from reality in this country, according to Levy.
