Macron to Trump: Accepting a New Colonial Approach is Illogical

SadaNews - French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the U.S. administration's policy toward European allies.

Macron, who wore sunglasses during statements made today, Tuesday, from the Davos Forum, stated that the United States seeks to weaken and subjugate Europe.

He also added that Europe is committed to the United Nations and will peacefully oppose the "law of the stronger."

Furthermore, he considered that "accepting a new colonial approach is illogical," asserting that "Europe possesses tools that must be used when it is not respected." He said: "We prefer respect over bullying and the rule of law over brutality."

Moreover, he emphasized that European countries must protect their interests while other countries violate international rules.

These remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump earlier today threatened to impose a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne in response to Macron's refusal to participate in the Gaza Peace Council.

Trump also deemed that no one cares about Macron's participation in this council because he will soon be leaving, as he expressed.

Meanwhile, close associates of the French president described the threats from his U.S. counterpart as "unacceptable and ineffective." They stated, "As we have reiterated, threats of imposing tariffs to influence our foreign policy are unacceptable and ineffective," according to AFP.

Moreover, Minister of Agriculture Annie Genevard confirmed on TF1 channel that "this threat is unacceptable and exhibits an unprecedented sharpness, and it is clear that it cannot go unchallenged, not only from France but from the entire European Union." She added that Trump's threat "aims to impose surrender, and it is a tool of blackmail."

It is noteworthy that since his return to the White House in his second term, Trump has adopted a policy described as harsh toward Europeans, repeatedly criticizing the European Union and NATO.

He has also criticized the EU's policy regarding dealing with Russia and Ukraine, as well as contributing to NATO funding, in addition to the Greenland issue and others.
