Mladenov: We hope to restore the political solution for the Palestinians and unify Gaza and the West Bank

SadaNews - The UN Special Coordinator for Gaza, Nikolai Mladenov, said on Saturday that he hopes to restore the political solution to the Palestinian issue back on its right track.

Mladenov stated in an interview with Cairo News Channel that the Security Council has set a transitional period of two years, but this depends on the conditions on the ground. He expressed hope that the technocratic committee will be able to assume its civil, administrative, and security responsibilities in the Gaza Strip.

He indicated that his role is to support the technocratic committee in Gaza, guide it, and assist it in the transitional process, noting that efforts will be made with mediators and all parties to create the conditions necessary for the committee to take over its responsibilities.

He said: "We must ensure the empowerment of the Palestinian technocratic committee and make sure it adequately understands the situation on the ground in Gaza, and I hope everyone will cooperate with either the committee or my office to ensure the success of this process."

He added: "We are on the verge of a unique opportunity for the Palestinian people and for the people in Gaza who have gone through an extremely difficult period."

Mladenov pointed out that the technocratic committee will take over all civil and security files in the administration of the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that it has a good mix of technical expertise that enables it to quickly deal with problems.

He expressed hope that the technocratic committee will begin a thorough study of the plans that need to be put in place across all sectors, saying: "There is a degree of optimism... and the people in Gaza are looking for a new hope for the future."

The UN Special Coordinator added: "It is in the interest of both the Palestinians and Israelis that the Gaza Strip takes a different path in its future."

He continued: "We hope that by the end of the transitional period, Gaza and the West Bank will be unified under one national leadership."
