In an Emergency UN Session.. Venezuela Accuses America of Trying to Exploit Its Natural Resources

SadaNews - Venezuela's representative to the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, accused the United States of violating his country's sovereignty, and demanded the release of President Nicolas Maduro and respect for his immunity, during an emergency session of the UN Security Council dedicated to discussing the US military operation in Venezuela.

Moncada stated in a speech delivered during the session held last night, that his country has become a victim of American attacks due to its natural resources, affirming that the US attack is an illegal aggression against his country and a blatant violation of the UN Charter.

He added that the repercussions of the US attack do not limit themselves to Venezuela, but extend to "the trust in international law and the United Nations," asserting that no country has the right to place itself in the position of judge and controller of the global system.

Moncada said, "Our commitment is solid to diplomacy and law, unwavering. We defend our sovereignty without abandoning our values, and we believe in dialogue without acceptance of dictates."

He continued, "We believe in a future of coexistence, development, and mutual respect among nations. We trust that this Security Council will rise to the historical moment facing humanity, and will choose the path of legitimacy, collective responsibility, and peace."

US Response and UN Concerns

In response to Venezuela's accusations, the US representative at the UN, Michael Walz, stated that his country conducted an operation to enforce the law to capture Maduro, who is wanted by justice, affirming that there is no war or occupation of Venezuela.

Walz said, "Maduro bears responsibility for the attacks on the people of the United States, destabilizing the western hemisphere, and illegally repressing the people of Venezuela," asserting that his country is not waging war against Venezuela or its people, as he put it.

In a stance reflecting the UN's concern over the escalation, UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo called for respect for the principles of sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity of states.

DiCarlo stated, "In light of the complex and ambiguous circumstances we currently face, it is important to adhere to the established principles to protect peace and security." She also demanded a "ban on the threat of use of force or its use" against sovereign states, affirming that the law must prevail.
