Report: Detainees in Ofer and Negev Prisons Face Extremely Difficult Humanitarian Conditions

SadaNews - The Palestinian Authority for Prisoners Affairs reported that detainees in "Ofer and Negev" prisons are suffering from extremely difficult humanitarian conditions.

This came after a visit by the legal team of the authority to several detainees in "Ofer and Negev" prisons, which reflected the harsh reality faced by detainees inside detention and investigation facilities.

The legal team documented a clear accumulation of physical and psychological pain among the detainees, due to ongoing medical neglect, a severe shortage of essential medications, and the absence of necessary health follow-ups, which led to the exacerbation of multiple medical conditions.

The authority indicated that there is a severe shortage of clothing and blankets, forcing detainees to use inadequate and tattered clothes that are unfit for use, violating the most basic humanitarian and international standards.

Detainees who were visited reported continuous deprivation of family visits, resulting in deep psychological effects, in addition to frequent and sudden transfers between sections or prisons, which constitute a tool of psychological and physical pressure.

The legal team also documented complaints about ongoing repression and maltreatment, through humiliating searches, collective punishments, and daily restrictions that affect the dignity and basic rights of the detainees.

The authority emphasized that these practices represent a blatant violation of international charters and humanitarian law, holding the responsible parties fully accountable for the safety of the detainees, and calling for urgent intervention to stop these violations and ensure their human and legal rights.
