Syria: 3 Dead and Injured in Renewed Clashes Between Government Forces and Kurds in Aleppo

SadaNews - Three people were killed on Monday and others were injured due to clashes that erupted in the city of Aleppo, northern Syria, between government and Kurdish forces, with both sides exchanging accusations over responsibility.

The clashes erupted in the city of Aleppo between members of forces affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and elements of the Syrian security forces, resulting in injuries on both sides that exchanged accusations of causing the incident, following a ceasefire that was reached in October.

SANA reported, "A civilian was killed due to shelling by the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) with mortars and rocket launchers in several neighborhoods in Aleppo," adding shortly thereafter, based on statements from the Aleppo Health Directorate: "Two fatalities and eight injuries resulted from the SDF shelling of neighborhoods in Aleppo."

SANA stated that the SDF shelled "indiscriminately with mortars and rocket launchers several neighborhoods in Aleppo, including Al-Jamiliyah and Al-Sariah."

It also mentioned that the SDF shelled Al-Razi Hospital in Aleppo.

The Aleppo Governorate announced the killing of a Syrian civilian and the injury of seven others as a result of artillery shelling by the SDF in the Ashrafiya and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods.

The Syrian transitional authorities have controlled Aleppo since they ousted opposition factions from President Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024.

However, local Kurdish forces linked to the Syrian Democratic Forces and its internal security forces (Asayish) control the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiya neighborhoods.

Earlier, the Syrian Ministry of Interior accused the Syrian Democratic Forces based in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiya neighborhoods of attacking "internal security forces stationed at joint checkpoints... despite the agreements made," adding that the attack resulted in "injury to one member of the internal security forces and one soldier. "

The media directorate of the Aleppo Governorate reported that three members of the civil defense were injured, as well as an unspecified number of civilians, due to an attack by the Syrian Democratic Forces.

On its part, the internal security forces affiliated with the Kurds reported that two of their members were injured "as a result of an attack carried out by factions linked to the Ministry of Defense in the Damascus government on a checkpoint in the Sheikh Maqsoud roundabout in Aleppo."

It reported the injury of five civilians, including a girl, due to the "ongoing attack" on the Kurdish neighborhoods "using mortars and heavy weapons by factions affiliated with the Damascus government."

The Ministry of Defense denied attacking sites affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces, adding that the latter attacked "unexpectedly positions of the internal security forces and army."

The Syrian "Ikhbariya" channel reported that four civilians and civil defense volunteers were injured by fire from SDF elements during an attack near the Ashrafiya neighborhood in Aleppo, northern Syria.

The channel noted that "four civilians and civil defense volunteers were injured in a preliminary toll following the SDF targeting of several neighborhoods in Aleppo."

Earlier on Monday, it was reported that "the SDF is targeting internal security points near Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Lirmoun roundabouts in northern Aleppo."

For its part, the Syrian civil defense announced in a statement that two of its members were injured "due to direct targeting by gunfire from the Syrian Democratic Forces while doing their duties at the Sheikh Maqsoud roundabout in Aleppo."

It clarified that "a civil defense rescue vehicle was subjected to gunfire while four members on board were heading to the Emergency Directorate and Disaster Management office in Aleppo Governorate, located at the Sheikh Maqsoud roundabout."

The statement pointed out that "the vehicle bore civil defense insignia clearly, and that the four members were wearing the official civil defense uniform."

It added: "The direct targeting of the vehicle by gunfire resulted in the injury of two of the members, who were immediately provided with first aid and taken to the hospital for necessary treatment."

The civil defense stated that the Emergency and Disaster Management Ministry confirms that "targeting civil defense teams is a serious crime and a blatant violation of humanitarian law, which obstructs the efforts to rescue civilians who are in desperate need of assistance and prevents the provision of life-saving humanitarian services."

On March 10, the Syrian president, Ahmad al-Shara, and the head of the SDF, Ferhad Abdi Shahin, known as Mazlum Abdi, signed an agreement to merge civilian and military institutions in northeastern Syria under state administration, but the organization is delaying its implementation.

The agreement included the opening of crossings, the airport, and oil and gas fields, and affirmed the unity of the country's territories, but the organization has broken it according to Syrian authorities, who are making intensive efforts under the new administration led by Shara to stabilize security in the country, since the overthrow, on December 8, 2024, of Bashar al-Assad's regime, which lasted 24 years in power.
