Morocco: At least 21 people die due to sudden floods
SadaNews - Local authorities in Morocco announced that at least 21 people have died due to sudden flooding caused by exceptional heavy rains in the coastal region of Safi overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, located about 330 kilometers south of the capital Rabat.
The authorities explained that the heavy rains, which lasted for about one hour, caused the flooding of around 70 homes and shops, swept away 10 cars, and cut off several roads in the city of Safi and its suburbs. Emergency services treated 32 individuals who were injured during the floods, most of whom have since been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment, while some cases remain under medical observation.
Videos and images circulating on social media showed torrents of muddy water sweeping through the city streets, carrying away cars and debris, in addition to scenes of a partially submerged shrine, and civil defense boats responding to residents' calls for help.
In the context of weather warnings, the General Directorate of Meteorology in Morocco announced on Sunday evening forecasts of heavy rain accompanied by storms next Tuesday across the country.
This situation follows seven years of drought, which has led to decreased levels in some of Morocco's main dams, while rescue efforts continue to assist those affected.
