UN Commissioner expresses concern over the recurrence of atrocities committed in El Fasher

SadaNews - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, stated today, Wednesday, that he is very concerned about the recurrence of atrocities committed in El Fasher (Western Sudan) in Kordofan.

Turk added in a press conference coinciding with the celebration of Human Rights Day that clashes are escalating in Sudan, and no civilian is safe from this horrific violence.

For his part, Sudan's Minister of Justice, Abdullah Darf, confirmed that his country is working on monitoring and documenting the violations and horrific crimes committed by the Rapid Support Forces, stating, "We will present the violations suffered by our people to international and national forums, and we will hold the perpetrators accountable in national and international courts."

Famine in Kadugli

Meanwhile, Sheldon Yett, representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Sudan, announced that famine has indeed occurred in the city of Kadugli in South Kordofan.

Kadugli has been suffering from a blockade imposed by the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement - North led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu since the early months of the war, along with repeated artillery and drone attacks.

There are no statistics on the number of displaced residents in Kadugli, but it has witnessed significant waves of displacement to the outskirts and surrounding areas over time.

In the meantime, UN agencies and relief organizations reported that tens of thousands fleeing from Darfur and Kordofan are still missing.

They added that around 100,000 displaced individuals have been recorded since the attacks in October, compared to fewer numbers that have actually reached the displacement sites.

The three states of Kordofan (North, West, and South) have been witnessing fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces for weeks, resulting in the recent displacement of tens of thousands.

The humanitarian suffering in Sudan is exacerbating due to the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces that erupted in April 2023 due to a dispute over the unification of the military institution, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of 13 million people.
