Kaya Callas: Most Countries Refuse to Participate in Disarming Hamas
SadaNews - The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaya Callas, stated that the EU is working towards achieving sustainable peace in several conflict zones around the world by building trust among parties and activating international law, which faces significant criticism.
Callas added, in an interview with Al Jazeera, that the world needs to turn peace from slogans into reality, and that the EU is trying to achieve this in the Gaza Strip with the support of the Palestinian Authority and commitment to the two-state solution.
She noted that the ceasefire in the territory has received substantial international support, but faces implementation issues because most countries do not want to take responsibility for disarming the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) under international stability forces.
She explained that the only current solution from the EU's perspective is to train local police to carry out this task, noting that the European Union is willing to participate in their training.
Regarding the lack of application of international law on Israel while Europeans seek to apply it to Russia, Callas stated that international law is facing significant criticism at the moment, and that the EU is trying to work on activating it in various issues and all regions of the world from Ukraine to Gaza, Sudan, and Congo.
Pressure on Russia
On the Ukrainian war, Callas remarked that Ukraine is the one most wanting peace because most Russian attacks target civilian infrastructure and schools, while Moscow has rejected the unconditional ceasefire that Kyiv accepted for negotiations, as she put it.
Regarding the military weakness that the European Union suffers from, which has even been mentioned by former U.S. President Donald Trump, Callas stated that wars end when the aggressor can no longer finance them, and that the EU is attempting to compensate for military gaps with more economic pressure on Moscow.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs explained that Europe will continue to tighten sanctions and target all channels through which Moscow can finance the war, including the oil and gas sectors and frozen Russian assets abroad.
Callas concluded by emphasizing the need for Russia to make concessions to establish peace and to stop its attacks on neighboring countries, which she stated have never ceased over the past decades.
