Albanese: The genocide in Gaza has erased 69 years of development
Sada News: The UN Human Rights Rapporteur for Palestine, Francesca Albanese, stated that a new UN report concluded that the Israeli war on Gaza has erased 69 years of human development, destroying health care systems, education, infrastructure, and even banks.
Albanese wrote in a post on X - on Tuesday - that this represents the worst economic collapse ever recorded, adding, "This is not a war; it is genocide."
The UN rapporteur published a summary of the report issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which clarified that the destruction witnessed in Palestine since October 2023 "has unleashed successive crises – economic, humanitarian, environmental, and social – pushing the occupied Palestinian territories from a lack of development to complete destruction."
The report noted that Gaza's economy contracted by 87% during 2023 and 2024, with per capita GDP declining to just $161, one of the lowest rates recorded globally.
The UN body explained that the Israeli war has destroyed every pillar of survival, including food, shelter, and health care, pushing Gaza to the "brink of total collapse."
The report indicated that the resulting economic crisis is among the worst 10 global economic crises since 1960.
It warned that the recovery process could take decades during which Gaza will remain dependent on extensive international support, noting that reconstruction will require more than $70 billion.
