Israel Fires on UNIFIL Forces in Southern Lebanon

SadaNews - The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported on Sunday that an Israeli tank fired on its soldiers near a post established by Israel within Lebanese territory.

UNIFIL clarified that the soldiers had to take cover to protect themselves about five meters away from the fire zone, and no injuries were reported.

In the context of Israeli aggression against Lebanon, Israeli aircraft dropped three sound bombs near a group of residents from the town of Dhahira while they were visiting the area; however, they were able to find shelter and leave safely after the Israeli tank withdrew.

UNIFIL emphasized that this incident constitutes a serious violation of UN resolution 1701, and called on the Israeli army to cease any attacks targeting its forces in southern Lebanon.

In a diplomatic move, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun requested an urgent complaint be filed to the United Nations Security Council after Israel constructed a concrete wall along the southern border that exceeds the blue line.

These incidents are not the first of their kind, as UNIFIL previously recorded on October 27, an Israeli drone downing attempt while trying to approach its patrols, and a bomb being dropped near its site in Kfarkila. Additionally, one of its soldiers sustained minor injuries on October 12 due to an explosion from a bomb dropped by an Israeli drone.

UNIFIL was established in 1978 following the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon and strengthened its mandate after the July 2006 war and UN resolution 1701, with the multinational force deploying over 10,000 soldiers to monitor the cessation of hostilities and support the Lebanese army in asserting its authority south of the Litani River.
