Yedioth Ahronoth Reveals a Controversial Clause in the Draft U.S. Document Regarding the International Force in Gaza
Translation by SadaNews - The Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth revealed on Wednesday evening what it described as a "controversial clause" in the draft U.S. document being prepared regarding the formation of the international force that will maintain security stability in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Hebrew website, as translated by SadaNews, the plan of U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the ceasefire explicitly mentions "disarming Hamas," while the document currently being prepared states "dismantling weapons in Gaza."
According to the site, this clause in the document that will be submitted to the United Nations Security Council for adoption as a general resolution will allow Hamas to retain its light weapons and avoid surrendering all its arms.
The site indicated that the United States is not seeking to issue a resolution from the Security Council, but rather a document formulated in vague and general terms, which will allow the Security Council to sponsor and endorse the establishment of the stability force that the United States will create in partnership with Arab and Islamic countries.
This force is supposed to operate under the umbrella of the "Peace Council," which is expected to be headed by President Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, according to the directives of the coordination center in Kiryat Gat, which will involve 40 countries.
It was noted that there is another point that displeases Israel, which is the reference to the United Nations as the authority for establishing the stability force and the Peace Council, allowing it to influence the drafting of the mandate granted to the force and rules of engagement.
Israel fears the emergence of another version of UNIFIL, which has repeatedly failed to carry out its mission of disarming Hezbollah.
The Hebrew site stated, as translated by SadaNews, that if this happens, the stability force will pose a hindrance for Israel to complete its main military tasks: ensuring that Hamas does not pose a threat to it and preventing it from rebuilding its military capabilities and infrastructure.
