More than One Million Users of 'ChatGPT' Discussing Suicide
SadaNews - Data released by OpenAI, the developer of the chatbot 'ChatGPT', revealed that over one million users expressed interest in suicide during their use of the tool, according to the company.
OpenAI stated in a blog post that approximately 0.15 percent of users engaged in "conversations that included explicit indicators of intentions or potential planning for suicide."
Given that over 800 million people use 'ChatGPT' weekly, this number is equivalent to about 1.2 million users, as reported by the French Press Agency.
The company added that 0.07 percent of weekly active users showed potential signs of emergency situations related to psychosis or mania, which accounts for fewer than 600,000 people.
This issue has brought to light the suicide of American teenager Adam Ren earlier this year in California, after his parents stated in a lawsuit that 'ChatGPT' provided him with specific guidance on how to end his life.
Since then, OpenAI has announced the enhancement of parental control tools and the implementation of additional protective measures, including increased access to mental health helplines, automatically directing sensitive conversations to safer models, and guiding users to take breaks during long sessions.
The company confirmed that it has updated the 'ChatGPT' systems to better recognize emergency psychological conditions, noting its collaboration with over 170 mental health professionals aimed at significantly reducing inappropriate responses.
