Warnings of El Fasher Turning into a 'Hub of Atrocities'
SadaNews - Gruesome accounts of severe violations have emerged from the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, amidst UN warnings of the city, which has endured a bloody siege for 18 months before falling into the hands of the "Rapid Support Forces" last Sunday, turning into a "hub of atrocities".
The UN fact-finding mission spoke of a "hub of systematic atrocities in El Fasher," encompassing mass killings, sexual violence, and the forcible displacement of civilians, urging the international community to establish an independent judicial body to hold the perpetrators accountable in coordination with the International Criminal Court.
On Friday, the spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Seif Magangou, stated, "We estimate that the number of civilians and detainees killed was in the hundreds." He mentioned testimonies about executions without trial and mass killings.
For its part, the International Committee of the Red Cross called on world leaders on Friday to take urgent action to stop the "indiscriminate killings" in Sudan, emphasizing that civilians are living in "an unimaginable terror," amidst repeated violations of the laws of war.
