First Arab to Hold the Position... Egyptian Khaled El-Anany Appointed Director-General of UNESCO
SadaNews - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced today, Monday, that the Egyptian candidate Khaled El-Anany won the position of new Director-General of the organization, succeeding the French Audrey Azoulay.
El-Anany defeated his Congolese competitor, Firmin Edouard Matoko, becoming the first Arab to head the organization, and the second African after the Senegalese Amadou Makhtar Mbow (1974-1987).
The official ratification of El-Anany’s victory and his assumption of duties is set to take place during a general assembly of the organization that includes all 194 member states, to be held on November 6 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
