First Visit in Decades.. Mike Huckabee to Visit Egypt in the Coming Days

SadaNews - The American ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, is expected to visit Cairo in the coming days to hold talks with senior Egyptian officials. This was stated by a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Israel to the "New York Times", amid tensions in relations between Israel and Egypt following the war on the Gaza Strip.

Three American and Middle Eastern sources informed the American newspaper that the discussions will focus on the war in Gaza, noting that this is the first official visit by a U.S. ambassador to Israel to Egypt in decades. Huckabee is expected to meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty.

The sources that spoke to the "New York Times" indicated that Huckabee is expected to address the tensions between the two countries during his visit, and two of them added that the talks would also cover the new U.S. plan to end the war in Gaza, which President Donald Trump presented to Arab and Muslim leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Egypt criticized the military operation launched by the Israeli occupation army this month in Gaza City.

In turn, Israeli officials recently expressed to Washington their concerns about the Egyptian military buildup in the Sinai Peninsula, located on the border between Israel and Gaza. The Egyptian government announced last week, in response to reports about troop buildup at the border, that "the forces are present in Sinai to protect the country's borders from all threats." Egypt also denied Israel's claim that deploying troops there violates the peace agreement between the two countries.
