Strict Campaign Against Crimes... Trump Enacts Death Penalty in Washington, D.C.
SadaNews - The American President Donald Trump announced the implementation of the death penalty in Washington, D.C. as part of a strict campaign against violent crimes, according to the "Telegraph".
The president signed an announcement yesterday, Thursday, which obligates prosecutors in the area to seek the death penalty in cases eligible for it, such as murder.
He said while signing the announcement in front of reporters in the Oval Office: "The death penalty, for the capital." He added: "We cannot allow this to happen. People come from Iowa to visit the Lincoln Memorial, and end up dying. This will not happen again... And if it does, the perpetrator will face the death penalty."
Trump emphasized that his deployment of the National Guard and federal law enforcement officers to combat crime in the city has made it "the safest" in the country.
Trump sent National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. as part of a crime wipeout campaign, which also led to the removal of homeless individuals from the streets of the capital.
Initially, about 450 federal personnel were deployed to the city, including members of the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Marshals Service.
Under the District of Columbia Self-Government and Governmental Reorganization Act of 1973, the President of the United States has the right to declare a criminal emergency and take federal control of the city's police management for 48 hours.
This has not been executed since the legislation was enacted and signed during the presidency of Richard Nixon.
The American president hopes that the implementation of the death penalty will serve as a deterrent to violent crimes once the National Guard withdraws. He has since pledged to deploy National Guard forces in Memphis, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
