Politico: Trump Promised Leaders That He Would Not Allow Netanyahu to Annex the West Bank
Translation by SadaNews - The American newspaper Politico revealed on Wednesday evening that President Donald Trump promised the Arab and Muslim leaders he met with yesterday at the United Nations that he would not allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the West Bank.
The newspaper quoted this from six informed sources who attended the session. SadaNews also translated it.
Two sources confirmed that Trump was firm on this issue, promising not to allow Israel to take such a step to annex the West Bank, which is governed by the Palestinian Authority and not Hamas.
An informed source on the talks indicated that despite Trump's assurances, a ceasefire to end Israel's ongoing war against Hamas for nearly two years has yet to be achieved.
Two sources familiar with the matter stated that Trump and his team presented a document outlining the administration's plan to end the war, including withdrawal from Gaza and a promise not to annex the West Bank, along with other details such as governance and security post-war.
Trump told reporters before his meeting with eight Arab countries at the United Nations that this meeting was "the most important" of the day, but he left without speaking to the press, and the participants have yet to issue any official statement regarding the content of their conversation.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan described the meeting as "productive" on Tuesday evening during an interview on Fox News, but he did not go into details.
Erdoğan and Trump are scheduled to meet again at the White House on Thursday.
The White House did not immediately respond to the report.
Arab leaders feel frustrated by Trump's opposition to recognizing a Palestinian state and his ongoing support for Netanyahu's attack on Hamas, which extended beyond Gaza earlier this month when Israel attempted to assassinate Hamas officials while they were in Qatar for peace talks.
Two sources familiar with the conversation said that the Arab leaders, before Tuesday's meeting, aimed to convince the U.S. president that any Israeli encroachment in the West Bank would likely lead to the collapse of the Abraham Accords.
The Abraham Accords are a significant achievement in foreign policy during Trump's first term, representing the normalization of relations between Israel and several Arab countries.
