Brazil Joins South Africa's Lawsuit Against Israel at the International Court of Justice
SadaNews - The International Court of Justice announced that Brazil has joined the lawsuit in which South Africa accuses Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
The court clarified in a statement last night that Brazil based its request to join, submitted on September 17, on Article 63 of the court's statute.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed Brazil's decision to formally request to join the lawsuit filed at the International Court of Justice by the Republic of South Africa against Israel regarding the crime of genocide committed against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
The Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that this step clearly expresses Brazil's commitment to the principles of international law and its support for justice and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, and constitutes an important addition to international efforts aimed at ending impunity and holding Israel accountable for its crimes.
This step is considered a sincere expression of Brazil's principled position in supporting international law and standing by justice and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The Foreign Ministry called on all countries of the world to follow in the footsteps of Brazil and South Africa, and to assume their legal and moral responsibilities in protecting the Palestinian people and stopping the genocidal crimes against them, and to join this lawsuit due to its significance in reinforcing the position of international law and consolidating international efforts aimed at achieving justice and putting an end to Israeli violations.
South Africa filed the lawsuit against Israel on December 29, 2023, due to its involvement in "acts of genocide" against our people in the Gaza Strip, supported by dozens of countries, in a historic precedent in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
South Africa submitted to the court a well-documented file of 84 pages, gathering evidence of Israel's killing of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and creating conditions "conducive to inflicting physical destruction on them," which constitutes a "genocide" against them.
On January 26, the International Court of Justice decided that Israel must take all measures to prevent acts prohibited under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and take action to ensure the immediate provision of urgent humanitarian needs to the Gaza Strip.
