Meeting between Families of Israeli Prisoners and the U.S. Secretary of State in Washington to Demand a Deal

SadaNews - Families of Israeli prisoners and released prisoners from the Gaza Strip met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Friday.

The families of the Israeli prisoners stated that they delivered a message to Rubio requesting that he meet with the families of the prisoners during his upcoming visit to Israel, where he is scheduled to head on Saturday.

They emphasized that a political agreement is the only way to ensure the return of the 48 prisoners held in Gaza, according to their statement.

According to their statement, Rubio reiterated his commitment to the return of all Israeli prisoners, explaining to the families that the U.S. administration is working tirelessly for their release.

He also stressed that the issue of prisoners lies at the heart of U.S. efforts in the Middle East and forms an integral part of any solution proposed. He promised to convey the voices of the prisoners' families with him to Israel.

Rubio noted that meetings have been held between Washington and Qatari officials to discuss the Israeli attacks on Qatar this week and their implications on reaching a deal.

Rubio is traveling to Israel on Saturday following days after the attack on the Qatari capital, Doha, in an attempted assassination of Hamas leaders, and ahead of the United Nations General Assembly on September 22 regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state.

The U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesperson stated that Rubio "will reaffirm in Israel the shared objectives between the U.S. and Israel, which include ensuring that Hamas never returns to power in Gaza and the return of hostages."

Rubio's visit comes before the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where many countries, including France and Britain, are expected to recognize a Palestinian state.

Rubio hinted that this step could push Israel to annex the occupied West Bank. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department spokesperson indicated that Rubio will also discuss with Israeli officials "our commitment to combating hostile actions against Israel, including unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, which would be a reward for Hamas for 'terrorism' and the judicial war in the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice."

He added, "The Secretary will also meet with the families of the hostages and affirm that the return of their loved ones remains a top priority."
