UN Approves With Overwhelming Majority the Declaration of a Two-State Solution

SadaNews - The United Nations General Assembly voted today, Friday, with an overwhelming majority in favor of supporting a declaration that outlines "concrete, time-bound, and irreversible steps" towards a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, just ahead of a meeting of world leaders in New York.

The resolution supporting the declaration received 142 votes in favor, 10 against, while 12 countries abstained from voting.

It also condemned Israeli attacks on civilians in Gaza, civilian infrastructure, the blockade, and starvation, and condemned Hamas's attacks on October 7, 2023, stating that the war in Gaza must end now.

This declaration, consisting of seven pages, is a result of an international conference held at the United Nations last July, hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The issue of recognizing the State of Palestine dominates the annual summit of the United Nations General Assembly, with the list of recognizing countries expected to be finalized during a French-Saudi conference held on the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings on September 22.

Individual leaders will also officially announce their decisions from the General Assembly platform during the "General Debate" sessions held from September 23 to 29.

It is noteworthy that at the end of July, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his country would recognize the State of Palestine during the General Assembly meetings from September 9 to 23. Since then, more than 12 Western countries have announced that they will follow France's lead.

Riyadh and France chaired the two-state solution conference, which launched last June, with widespread momentum and global consensus on a "fair" settlement of the Palestinian issue and condemnation of the "starvation of Gaza."
