A senior Hamas source: The movement's delegation in Doha survives an Israeli assassination attempt
SadaNews - A senior source in the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) told Al Jazeera that the movement's leadership delegation, headed by Khalil Hayya, survived an Israeli assassination attempt targeting them in the Qatari capital, Doha, today, Tuesday.
The source explained that an Israeli airstrike targeted the Hamas leadership delegation in Doha while they were meeting to discuss the latest proposal from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
For its part, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned in a statement the "cowardly Israeli attack that targeted residential premises of several members of Hamas's political bureau in Doha."
The statement confirmed that this "criminal aggression is a violation of all international laws and a serious threat to the safety and security of Qataris and residents," stressing that the State of Qatar "will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behavior" or "any actions that target its security and sovereignty."
Details of the assassination attempt
The Israeli army announced in a statement that the air force "precisely attacked Hamas leaders" in a joint operation by the army and the internal security service (Shabak).
It added that the targets of the attack had led Hamas activities for years.
For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office - who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes in Gaza - stated that "the operation against senior Hamas leaders is entirely independent and initiated by Israel, executed and for which it bears full responsibility."
Israeli media sources reported that warplanes fired 12 rockets at sites where Hamas leaders were located in Doha.
Channel 14 reported that among the leaders targeted by the attack were Khalil Hayya and Zaher Jabarin, while Channel 12 mentioned that the attack also targeted Khalid Mishal.
An Israeli official told Channel 14 that the army is awaiting the results of the assassination attempt, noting that fighter jets carried out the attack.
Explosions rang out in Doha this afternoon, and smoke columns were seen rising in the city's sky.
The Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, Eyal Zamir, had threatened on August 31 to target Hamas leaders abroad, coinciding with the ongoing war of extermination and starvation in Gaza for nearly two years.
