Iranian Foreign Ministry: We will lower uranium enrichment levels if a deal is reached
SadaNews - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baqaei confirmed that his country will reduce uranium enrichment levels to 3.67%, as stipulated in the 2015 agreement, if a new nuclear deal is reached.
In statements to the British newspaper The Guardian published on Monday, Baqaei emphasized that his country will not accept illegal demands related to its nuclear program.
Regarding the decision by the European troika - the UK, France, and Germany - in the 2015 nuclear agreement to activate the "snapback" mechanism that could reimpose UN sanctions on Iran, Baqaei stated that the Europeans are doing what US President Donald Trump ordered them to do, warning that "the role of the Europeans will diminish if they continue to act as agents of the United States and Israel."
Baqaei also referred to the attacks carried out by Israel on Iran last June, saying: "In a way, all European countries ignored what Israel did, and it is very likely that they provided the Israeli regime with information."
With regards to the bill prepared by the Iranian parliament, which stipulates Iran's withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in the event of reimposing UN sanctions, Baqaei clarified that the government cannot constitutionally prevent the implementation of this law, and the decision to withdraw rests with the parliament.
Britain, France, and Germany decided to activate the "snapback" mechanism included in the nuclear agreement, which was suspended after the United States withdrew from it in 2018. Since Washington's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action known as the nuclear agreement in 2018, Trump imposed a series of harsh sanctions aimed at strangling the Iranian economy and limiting Tehran's regional influence.
In August and September 2020, Washington submitted two requests to the United Nations to activate the "snapback" mechanism and impose comprehensive sanctions on Iran for its non-compliance with the nuclear agreement.
The "snapback" mechanism allows for the reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran if a party to the nuclear agreement signed between the five permanent members of the Security Council (the United States, Russia, China, the UK, and France) along with Germany and Iran in 2015 requests it.
