Britain: Famine in Gaza a Moral Scandal and a Man-Made Catastrophe
SadaNews - The British government has described the "famine in Gaza" as a "moral scandal" and a man-made catastrophe, emphasizing that "the famine in the city of Gaza and the surrounding areas is extremely horrific and wholly preventable."
A statement from British Foreign Secretary David Lammy noted that the Israeli government's refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza has caused this man-made catastrophe, adding, "It is a moral scandal."
The statement indicated that the report from the "Integrated Food Security Phase Classification" outlines the dire consequences, particularly for children, noting that "the Israeli government can, and must, act immediately to prevent further deterioration of the situation. It must immediately and sustainably allow food, medical supplies, fuel, and all forms of aid to reach those in desperate need."
The statement, posted on the British Foreign Office's website, also called on the Israeli government to allow the United Nations and international non-governmental organizations to "carry out their life-saving work without hindrance. Aid must urgently and without delay reach those in need."
"We urgently need an immediate ceasefire to facilitate the prompt delivery of aid at the required scale. This includes halting the military operation in the city of Gaza, the epicenter of the famine," he said.
The UK reiterated its condemnation of this military action, which will only "aggravate the already catastrophic humanitarian situation and put the lives of hostages held by Hamas at risk. We urge the Israeli government to change its course and halt its plans."
In conclusion, the British Foreign Office reiterated the necessity of ending the "horrific conflict," stressing that an immediate and permanent ceasefire is the only way to end suffering, ensure the release of hostages, achieve a significant increase in aid, and establish a framework for lasting peace.
