Danish Prime Minister: Netanyahu Represents a Problem in Himself

SadaNews - Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that Israel would be in a better position without him. This is the first time such a clear statement has been made.

In an interview with the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten regarding the Israeli attacks on Gaza, Frederiksen said that Netanyahu's continued and excessively violent actions in Gaza are unacceptable. While she acknowledged that the Israeli government is an internal matter for the Israelis, she emphasized her firm belief that Netanyahu represents a problem in himself.

In response to a question about whether Denmark should help war children by bringing them out of Gaza and transferring them to Danish hospitals, Frederiksen said, "The humanitarian disaster in Gaza still occupies a major part of our concern. The images we see from Gaza are horrifying. Children without food. Without medicine. Under the rubble. The human suffering is unimaginable. It cannot be justified."

She considered the violent actions from Israel to undermine the chances of achieving a two-state solution, which also applies to the illegal settlements in the West Bank, reaffirming that Denmark supports the establishment of a Palestinian state, "which has always been part of the two-state solution that we see as the path toward the future."

She stated, "We bear the responsibility to ensure that the recognition of Palestine serves the right purpose, and this must occur at a time when it actively contributes to promoting the two-state solution. And guarantees the establishment of a sustainable and democratic Palestinian state... And of course, this must be based on mutual recognition of Israel."

However, Frederiksen noted that recognizing the State of Palestine at this moment would not help thousands of children who are currently struggling to survive, no matter how much we may wish for that.

She added, "Instead, we need to increase pressure on both Israel and Hamas. In the next six months, Denmark will hold the presidency of the European Union. This is a special responsibility, and we will work through it to increase this pressure... It will be difficult to garner sufficient support, but we will do everything we can."

She emphasized that the top priority right now is to deliver humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, considering that preventing aid from reaching them is absolutely unacceptable.

Additionally, the Danish Prime Minister stressed that Denmark, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, is considering imposing sanctions on Israel due to the ongoing fighting in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
