Brazil Confirms Proceeding with Bolsonaro's Trial Despite External Pressures
SadaNews - The Supreme Court of Brazil has confirmed that it will proceed with the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, despite external pressures.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes stated that the court would not succumb to sanctions or foreign pressure. He did not specifically mention the United States or its president, but tensions between the two countries have escalated this week.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against de Moraes for the alleged suppression of freedom of expression, and Trump signed an order imposing a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods.
Washington cited what it described as the "political persecution" of former President Jair Bolsonaro as the reason for the tariffs.
Bolsonaro has been accused of plotting a conspiracy to remain in power after losing the presidential election in 2022, and his trial is expected to take place later this year.
De Moraes, who oversees the case against Bolsonaro, affirmed the independence of the judiciary.
He stated: "The Supreme Court will always be steadfast in defending national sovereignty and in its commitment to democracy, the rule of law, judicial independence, and the constitutional principles of Brazil."
