Italian Prime Minister: I will recognize the Palestinian state after its establishment
SadaNews - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said today (Saturday) that recognizing the State of Palestine before its establishment could lead to counterproductive results.
She added in a statement to the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica": "I strongly support (the establishment of) the State of Palestine, but I do not support recognizing it before its establishment... If something that does not exist is recognized on paper, the problem may appear to be solved while it is not solved."
The decision by France to recognize a Palestinian state during the United Nations General Assembly in September evoked condemnation from Israel and the United States amidst the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said yesterday (Friday) that recognition of a Palestinian state should be coupled with this new state recognizing Israel.
A spokesman for the German government mentioned yesterday that Berlin does not intend to recognize a Palestinian state in the near future, and that its priority now is to make "long-overdue progress" towards a "two-state solution."
