
Report: Ankara Played a "Decisive" Role in Reaching a Ceasefire in Syria
SadaNews - Turkey played a decisive role in reaching a ceasefire in Syria following the Israeli airstrikes on Damascus, including intelligence officials conducting talks with the Druze leader in Syria, according to a Turkish security source, today Thursday.
The source, who spoke to Reuters, stated that Turkish intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin, held discussions about the Israeli strikes with his counterparts in the United States, Israel, and Syria, as well as with Syrian President, Ahmad al-Shara.
The official Turkish Anadolu Agency also quoted security sources today that Ankara played a pivotal role in achieving a ceasefire in Syria's Sweida province, after clashes began between the Bedouins and Druze, which later extended between government forces and local armed groups.
The sources mentioned that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin had communications regarding the field situation, which played a key role in achieving a ceasefire among the parties.
The sources stated that during the clashes that lasted two days in Sweida, Turkey adopted a firm stance and sided with the Damascus government. According to the sources, Ankara made intensive efforts to ensure calm among the parties and had a crucial role in the ceasefire.
They also mentioned that Kalin had multiple communications with his interlocutors in the United States, Syria, and Israel, and communicated with the Druze in Lebanon. Fidan discussed with a number of figures ranging from his American interlocutors to his counterparts in the region, according to the same sources.
The sources also confirmed that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received updates from the relevant officials about the communications and developments moment by moment.
