Trump: I Will Issue a "Significant Announcement" Regarding Russia on Monday
SadaNews - Last night, U.S. President Donald Trump told NBC News that he will issue a "significant announcement" regarding Russia next Monday, without clarifying what it would entail.
In recent days, Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine.
Trump told NBC News: "I think I will make a significant announcement regarding Russia on Monday," adding: "I am disappointed with Russia."
On Monday, Trump announced that he wants to send "more" weapons "to Kyiv, especially "defensive" ones, accusing Putin the following day of speaking "nonsense" about Ukraine and hinting that he intends to impose new sanctions on Russia.
Despite the pressure exerted by the U.S. president, Moscow and Kyiv remain far from agreeing on a ceasefire or a long-term settlement.
Ukrainian officials accuse Moscow of trying to "buy time" as the Russian army, which has superior numbers and equipment, makes progress on the front.
This comes as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov proposed to him a "new idea" regarding the conflict in Ukraine during a "frank conversation" they had in Malaysia on Thursday.
Amid escalating Russian strikes and stalled diplomacy, Rubio met Lavrov on the sidelines of a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
Rubio announced that during their meeting in Malaysia, his Russian counterpart presented a "new idea or concept" regarding Ukraine that he will convey to Trump for discussion.
He stated to reporters: "It's not a new approach. It's a new idea or a new concept that I will take to the president for discussion," pointing out that it is not something that "automatically leads to peace, but it may open a pathway."
Rubio revealed that he expressed during this "frank conversation" in Kuala Lumpur Trump's "dissatisfaction" and "disappointment" in light of the "lack of progress" in halting the ongoing war in Ukraine since 2022.
